RX-105 Xi Gundam

RX-105 Xi Gundam is a fifth-generation mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway (2021, U.C. 0105), built by Anaheim Electronics and procured by the anti-Federation movement Mafty for its attack on the Adelaide conference. Hathaway Noa flies it under the name Mafty Navue Erin.

What it does in the story

The Xi Gundam's first deployment happens in the air: Hathaway boards the cargo ship Cargo Pisa as it descends, takes the suit out of the hold and is pursued by the Penelope. He glides above the sea, launches his beam rifle ahead as a decoy, and when the Penelope fires at it he closes with funnel missiles.

What makes it different

  • The Minovsky Flight Unit is built in. The Penelope relies on optional units for similar functions, while the Xi carries its flight unit inside the frame. That is why it is treated as a completed fifth-generation machine.
  • Its flight form goes supersonic. The shoulder armour carrying the flight unit and the rear stabiliser extend to make the Flight Form. The beam barrier is shaped aerodynamically for it, letting the suit reach roughly Mach 2.
  • Ten funnel missiles hang on the rear skirt. They are psycommu-guided, so in a Minovsky particle environment they change course and track a target after launch, unlike the unguided triple missiles in the forearms and knees.
  • The shield is a weapon bay with a beam cannon. Mounted on the left forearm, it is thick enough to take mega particle cannon fire. Its tip carries a beam cannon and the inside stores missiles and sand barrels.
  • Sub-manipulators let it pick up other suits' weapons. Each palm carries an extra three-finger manipulator so the Xi can use standard hand weapons built for other suits. The shoulder beam sabers can also emit blades from the base of the handle while mounted.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 26 m, according to Bandai's published spec
  • 1/144: roughly 18 cm, which covers the HGUC releases

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Xi Gundam the same machine as the Penelope?

No. The Penelope is the RX-104FF, a separate machine that needs optional units to match the Xi's flight and barrier functions. The two fight each other in the film.

2. How is Xi pronounced?

The Japanese reading is Kusī, and the name is also given as Ksi Gundam, after the Greek letter.

3. Does the Xi Gundam transform?

It is listed as transformable, but the change is the shoulder armour and rear stabiliser extending into an aircraft form rather than the whole frame rearranging.

4. What makes its beam rifle different?

Muzzle velocity is close to double that of earlier models, enough to destroy a Gustav Karl in one shot. A spare E-pack rides in a barrel holder Mafty's mechanics improvised for the crossing of Australia.
