This is the IDW Rodimus: Rodimus of Nyon, formerly Hot Rod, captain of the Lost Light in the 2005 continuity rather than the Generation 1 Rodimus Prime.
What it does in the story
Before the war he was unaffiliated, and he stood against Zeta Prime and the Senate without joining the Decepticons. He ends up with a ship and a crew of misfits, and the run's argument is that they become a family under him.
What makes it different
Captain, not Prime.
The Generation 1 Rodimus Prime carries the Matrix and the title; this one commands a starship.
Both names are his.
The IDW run uses Hot Rod and Rodimus for the same bot.
The crew is the story.
His record is a list of expensive mistakes softened by other people.
What this collection covers
Flame Toys made both. Kuro Kara Kuri's eighth release is the IDW Rodimus as a large articulated figure; the Furai Model is the same design as a kit.
