RMS-099 Rick Dias

RMS-099 Rick Dias is the AEUG's mass-production attack-use mobile suit from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985, U.C. 0087), developed jointly by Anaheim Electronics and the AEUG itself. Much of the design team had come out of the Principality of Zeon, which is why the machine reads as a Dom descendant with a mono-eye and a heavy silhouette.

What it does in the story

Three Rick Dias flew the raid on Gryps that carried off the Titans' new Gundam Mk-II, with Quattro Bajeena leading in his red machine. The type went to the AEUG's experienced pilots rather than to specialists, and it was advanced enough at the start of the Gryps Conflict that the Titans tried to take examples from the Argama. Newer suits on both sides overtook it before the war ended.

What makes it different

  • Its armour is Gundarium γ. Quattro brought the alloy out of Axis and Anaheim built the suit around it. It matches standard Gundarium in strength at lower weight, and the mass saved went into fuel capacity; the AEUG briefly intended to call the machine γ Gundam before the Rick Dias name was settled.
  • The cockpit is in the head. A panoramic monitor and linear seat sit in the head rather than the torso, with the hatch on the left side, which was an early use of the layout. The cockpit is built as an ejection pod, and the head is designed to blow apart so the pod can get clear.
  • The booster binders do more than hold propellant. The pair on the backpack combines vernier thrusters with propellant tanks and swings like a limb to help with AMBAC. Once they are empty they can be jettisoned, which sheds weight in the middle of a fight.
  • The hands are launchers. Each hand carries a specialised launcher that fires fire-suppressing gas or a binding adhesive. The beam pistols stowed on the backpack rack can also fire from the rack within a limited arc, so the suit is not disarmed while reaching for something else.

Frequently asked questions

1. Why does an Anaheim machine carry an RMS model number?

It was designed as the MSA-099. Before the Gryps Conflict opened, the number was changed to RMS-099 to disguise AEUG activity as ordinary Federation procurement, and the machine kept the cover designation afterwards.

2. Were all Rick Dias black?

No. The first standard scheme was black and dark grey, and the red finish started as Quattro's personal colours. Other AEUG pilots copied him, and red replaced black as the standard scheme.

3. What is the Clay Bazooka for?

It was designed to fire adhesive rounds that immobilise a machine instead of destroying it, though explosive and pellet ammunition could be loaded too. It holds one round in the chamber and seven in the magazine, and hooks onto the backpack when not in use.

4. Where does the name Rick Dias come from?

From Bartolomeu Dias, the navigator who rounded the Cape of Good Hope, with the Rick prefix marking a space-use machine. The name also carried the sense that the AEUG's campaign had reached its turning point.
