Rin Itoshi

Rin Itoshi is a forward in Blue Lock, the football manga Muneyuki Kaneshiro writes and Yusuke Nomura draws. He is a first-year high school student and the younger brother of Sae Itoshi, and he climbs from the bottom of his stratum to the top of the programme.

What makes Rin Itoshi stand out

• The kick is the weapon. Rin's accuracy is what other characters talk about: shots from outside the box, free kicks curled over a wall, a corner taken straight at goal. He needs room to set the strike, and the rest of his game buys it.
• Puppet control. He reads the pitch as a map of other people's habits and moves them where he wants, using their own strengths as the mechanism. The series calls it puppet control, and it is why he is dangerous without the ball.
• The brother. Sae left for Spain and returned as a different kind of player. Rin's flat delivery, his curtness and his habit of calling everyone lukewarm are copied from him; the rivalry is the engine.
• Flow, then Predator Eye. In the Japan U-20 match he finds the state the series calls Flow, where his play turns physical and destructive. Predator Eye comes later.
