RGM-89D Jegan D Type

RGM-89D Jegan D Type is the overhauled Jegan of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (U.C. 0096) and the Earth Federation's standard general-purpose machine in that period. It is a separate model from the RGM-89 in the 1988 film: the D Type began rolling out in U.C. 0094.

What it does in the story

The earliest record of the type is U.C. 0094, when D Types escorted Federation cargo aboard two Clop-class cruisers, the Unkai and the Ra Dels. In the 0096 Laplace Incident two D Types and a Stark Jegan try to intercept the Sleeves freighter Garencieres, and both are destroyed by the Kshatriya's funnels.

What makes it different

  • The mount latches are the point of the design. Latches on the shoulder armour and the front of the waist take extra equipment, which is how the same airframe becomes a Stark Jegan or carries another mission pack.
  • The head vulcan now throws its brass. Its 60mm rounds come from a magazine on the right of the head and are cased, so the cases eject from the top of the pod. The original Jegan's were caseless.
  • The first ones wore GM colours. Early production D Types were finished in the red and white of the One Year War GM, and the scheme had moved close to the standard Jegan's by U.C. 0096.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 20.4 m, with a head height of 19.0 m, per the machine's spec listing
  • 1/144: roughly 14 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 20.5 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Jegan D Type the Jegan that appears in Char's Counterattack?

No. The 1988 film uses the original RGM-89 Jegan. The D Type is the later upgraded model, rolled out from U.C. 0094 and seen in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.

2. What are the latches on the shoulders and waist for?

They are attachment points for optional equipment, so the suit can be fitted for a mission without a rebuild. The Stark Jegan is the heaviest package built on them.

3. How is the Jegan D Type different from the Stark Jegan?

The Stark Jegan is a special-forces anti-ship version built on the D Type, with added armour, thrusters and shoulder missile pods. The D Type is the general-purpose machine most crews flew.

4. Which rifle did the D Type on the Nahel Argama carry?

The ReZEL's beam rifle. Its muzzle can generate a beam blade, turning the rifle into a long saber; that machine used it against the Banshee Norn.
