Adopted in U.C. 0089, RGM-89 Jegan is the Earth Federation's general-purpose mass-production mobile suit of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (1988, U.C. 0093). Anaheim Electronics developed and supplied it rather than Federation engineers, combining the service's GM-series experience with the design thinking behind the MSA-003 Nemo. Londo Bell fields it against Char Aznable's Neo Zeon.
What it does in the story
Fewer than a hundred Jegans existed when the Second Neo Zeon War broke out, mostly with Londo Bell and the Luna II garrison, and Londo Bell's machines carried a large share of the fighting. The type is on screen in the attempt to push the falling asteroid Axis back, and after the war it settled in as the Federation's standard mobile suit for decades.
What makes it different
It is written as mobile infantry, not a duelling machine.
The design follows the original mobile suit idea of infantry for close combat in and around space colonies, which is why the rifle has a short barrel and the armour is lightened for manoeuvring rather than protection.
The shield carries its own missiles.
A pair of twin missile launchers sit in the shield. The small missiles home on composite sensors even through Minovsky particle interference, but they carry little propellant, so they are a close-in weapon rather than a stand-off option.
The beam saber has two emitters.
Output and emitter can be selected to produce a flat blade for slashing or a slim blade for penetration. The rack also holds a capacitor system that recharges the saber quickly between swings.
The front skirt was removed on purpose.
Deleting the front skirt armour keeps the legs' full range of articulation, and the lighter armour that comes with the design is what gives the Jegan its manoeuvrability. A calf thruster on each leg and verniers on the front shoulder armour handle attitude control.

Frequently asked questions
1. What is the difference between the RGM-89 and the RGM-89D?
The RGM-89 is the machine from the 1988 film. The RGM-89D Jegan D Type is an improved version with mount latches on the shoulder armour and the front of the waist for extra equipment, used in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, and it keeps the same basic armament.
2. Is the Jegan a GM?
It comes from the GM line, as the RGM model number indicates. Unlike earlier RGM machines it was not designed by Federation engineers: Anaheim Electronics produced and supplied it, and its performance is significantly higher than the RGM-86R GM III's.
3. Which Jegan kits does the collection cover?
The type appears in 1/144 High Grade, including the 2009 HGUC kit and the Axis Shock image colour release, and in 1/100 Master Grade with a completely new internal frame from 2018.
4. What is the Axis Shock colour version?
It is a colour variation of the 1/144 Jegan released through Gundam Side-F, finished in the scheme Bandai associates with the scene where Federation suits join the attempt to push Axis back.
