RGM-86R GM III is the Earth Federation Forces' mass-production general-purpose mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986, U.C. 0088). It was developed under the "GM III Plan" as the successor to the RMS-179 GM II.
What it does in the story
The GM III entered service during the First Neo Zeon War and stayed the Federation's mainstay into the 1990s, when the Jegan series began replacing it. In U.C. 0093 the 88th Fleet deployed several to help stop Axis from falling on Earth, and by U.C. 0096 the type was still fighting at Dakar and Torrington Base.
What makes it different
Its backpack is a mass-production Gundam Mk-II unit.
It keeps the functions of the Mk-II's backpack while cutting cost, and retains the docking mechanism for the FXA-05D G-Defenser.
It is a missile platform as much as a rifleman.
A missile pod fits on each shoulder with its own sensors and four medium missiles, or an option pod with fifteen micro-missiles. Large missile launchers mount on the side skirts, two missiles each, and either can be ejected once empty.
The beam rifle is the GM II's with more output.
Cost and appearance stayed close to the older BR-S-85-C2, but output rose by about 50 per cent to 2.8 MW. Usability was not improved and endurance remained an issue.
Its beam javelin cannot retract into a saber.
The mass-produced beam javelin has several beam blades at the top of a long handle for reach, and can be thrown. Unlike the Gundam's, the handle does not collapse into a beam saber.
How big is it?
Overall height: 18.6 m, with a head height of 18.0 m, according to Bandai's published spec
1/144: roughly 13 cm, which covers the HGUC kit

Frequently asked questions
1. Is the GM III just a GM II with new armour?
No. It was a new build under the GM III Plan, and in some areas it matched or passed the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II. The GM II's lineage shows in the beam rifle, carried over with more output.
2. Why does the HGUC GM III look like the Unicorn version?
It was marketed as the ZZ version but takes cues from the Unicorn redesign, including Katoki-style feet and the circular covers on the knees, elbows and ankle guards. It also drops the G-Defenser mount, though the backpack can be swapped for the Mk-II's.
3. Which shield does the GM III carry?
The FADEGEL RGM-M-Sh-003, the basic shield GM types had used since the One Year War. Units in the 1990s also used the Jegan's shield with a pair of twin missile launchers.
4. When did the GM III leave frontline service?
It stayed the Federation's mainstay until the Jegan series took over in the 1990s, with second-line and garrison units keeping it longer.
