RGM-79SP GM Sniper II is the Earth Federation Forces' late One Year War precision machine, introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989, U.C. 0079). It was built on the RGM-79G GM Command with the thinking behind the GM Sniper Custom folded in, and it was one of the last GM types developed before the war ended.
What it does in the story
In 0080 three GM Sniper IIs form the Deep Blue Team aboard the Gray Phantom, deployed with a Guncannon Mass Production Type to stop the Kämpfer at Ribo. Two of them close with machine guns and are destroyed; the third fires the team's only sniper rifle from the ship's deck and misses. Other units of the same period serve with the White Dingo Team in Australia and in Lydo Wolf's black colours.
What makes it different
The visor is a sensor package, not a face.
Goggles drop over the main camera, and the head carries compound sensors, laser rangefinding, zoom cameras and image stabilisers built for long range work. Coolers in the head unit pull heat and electrical noise out of the array, which is what keeps a distant image steady.
The thrusters are split between precision and pitch.
Two backpack verniers are tuned for fine control while four large verniers in the legs supply the output, and the arrangement gives the suit its rapid nose-up and nose-down movement. The main verniers run along the machine's core axis, a layout the Nemo and the Jegan would later reuse.
It fires projectile sniper rifles.
The Franz EF-KAR98K 75mm rifle is bolt-action with a five-round magazine, and because it throws a shell rather than a beam it is not pushed around by magnetic fields or solar wind. Its rate of fire is poor, so it is a first-shot weapon rather than something to fight a mobile suit with.
It is not limited to sniping.
On paper its specifications were better than the RX-78-2 Gundam's, it can carry almost any existing Federation armament, and it was one of the few production suits that could meet a Gelgoog one-on-one. Very few were built, because it arrived at the end of the war and cost more than a standard GM.

Frequently asked questions
1. Why were so few GM Sniper IIs built?
Timing and cost. The design was finished near the end of the One Year War, so there was no time to build a run, and the specialised sensor head and vernier fit priced it above a standard mass-production GM. Apart from a few test machines it had no follow-up model.
2. What rifle does the GM Sniper II carry?
Its signature weapon is the Franz EF-KAR98K 75mm sniper rifle, a bolt-action gun with a scope wired into the suit's fire control. The suit also appears with several beam sniper rifles, including the long-range XBR-X-79YK that can be cabled to an external power and cooling supply.
3. Which units used the GM Sniper II?
The Deep Blue Team aboard the Gray Phantom in 0080, the White Dingo Team on the Australian front, and ace pilot Lydo Wolf, whose machine was painted black. After the war the Titans fielded a modernised version with a new optical camera and a wider sensor radius.
4. What are the four large verniers in the legs for?
Pitching. The backpack thrusters are set up for precision rather than raw output, so the leg verniers make up the difference and let the suit snap its nose up or down to hold a firing line without drifting off target.
