RGM-79Q GM Quel

RGM-79Q GM Quel is the first mass-production mobile suit built for the Titans, the Earth Federation's elite counter-insurgency unit, and it appears in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1991, U.C. 0083). It was manufactured at Luna II on the frame of the Augusta base's high-performance RGM-79N GM Custom, and the first units were ready in December U.C. 0083.

What it does in the story

Jamitov Hymen ordered the machine while the Titans were still only a proposal, so the first GM Quels were finished and issued the moment the organisation was established. The type carried the unit through its early years of colony peacekeeping, riot control and suppression work until the Gryps Conflict in U.C. 0087, when newer machines replaced it, and its blue paint scheme became the standard Titans livery across other suits.

What makes it different

  • It is a simplified GM Custom, not simply a cheaper one. The Titans stripped complexity out of the GM Custom to make the machine lighter and easier to mass produce while keeping performance largely intact. Any durability lost in that simplification was recovered with new design concepts rather than extra material.
  • Its arm design points forward to the Movable Frame. The arm unit built for the GM Quel was later developed further into the Movable Frame concept used by the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and the generation of suits that followed it.
  • The sensors were fitted for watching people, not duelling. Multi-purpose sensor units sit on the lower calf of both legs and above the left chest intake, and the head's sensor and communication gear was upgraded as well. The purpose was monitoring the surrounding environment and civilian populations while on peacekeeping duty.
  • Some garrison units kept the machine gun on purpose. Titans funding made a beam rifle an option, but colonial garrison units often stayed with the standard 90mm GM Rifle to limit collateral damage to colony walls.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 18.1 m, per the machine's official spec listing, at 39.8 t dry and 56.3 t gross
  • 1/144: roughly 12.6 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Was the GM Quel a Titans machine or an Earth Federation machine?

Both. It was built for the Titans as their first mass-produced suit, and Federation units placed temporarily under Titans command used GM Quels painted in the red and white Federation colours.

2. Why would a GM Quel carry a machine gun instead of a beam rifle?

Because of where it worked. The suit was used inside space colonies for riot control, and a beam rifle risks breaching a colony wall, so garrison units kept the 90mm GM Rifle whose accuracy and caseless ammunition cause less damage to the surroundings.

3. What is the connection between the GM Quel and the Gundam Mk-II?

The GM Quel's arm unit design was developed into the Movable Frame idea used on the Mk-II. The Titans Test Team also used the GM Quel as the base for developing the RX-121 Gundam TR-1 Hazel series, testing prototypes in live combat against Zeon remnants.

4. Where was the GM Quel built?

At Luna II, using the Federation's own manufacturing capacity. The point of building it in-house was political as much as industrial: the early Titans wanted the machine to demonstrate their self-sufficiency.
