RGM-79G GM Command is the Earth Federation's colony-defence mobile suit from the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989), in service from December U.C. 0079. It was developed from the RGM-79D GM Cold Districts Type alongside a space-use version.
What it does in the story
Built in the last weeks of the One Year War, the GM Command never reached numbers that would have changed anything, so most units sat on colony and base defence. In 0080 a group is stationed at the neutral Side 6 colony Ribo, and the Scarlet Team's machines are wiped out when the Kämpfer enters the colony.
What makes it different
Its firepower was turned down on purpose.
As a machine for defending colonies, its output and weaponry were adjusted to reduce the chance of fatal damage to colony structures during a firefight.
The backpack was rebuilt for gravity.
Thrusters are spread around the body, and the backpack's verniers point downward for movement under gravity inside a colony. Sensors take the place of the standard GM's saber rack there.
It is the first GM with a mono-eye.
The GM Command series is the first in the GM line to use a mono-eye camera in the head, a change made for ease of production, plus extra sensors for detecting people and materials.
A better generator cost it production numbers.
The higher-output generator made beam weapons practical, but such generators could then only be built in zero-gravity plants, and Jaburo could not turn the suit out in bulk.
How big is it?
Head height: 18.0 m, per the machine's spec listing
1/144: roughly 12.5 cm

Frequently asked questions
1. Why is the GM Command called the Colony Type?
Because it specialised in defending space colonies and the space around them. Its output and weapons were set so a missed shot was less likely to breach the structures it protected.
2. Was the GM Command a commander's mobile suit?
Not by design. Only a small number were built and given to experienced pilots, who were often made platoon commanders, which is where the name came from.
3. How does the GM Command relate to the GM Command Space Type?
Both were developed at the same time from the GM Cold Districts Type, one for ground and one for space, and both gathered data for the next generation of mass-production suits.
4. What did the GM Command lead to?
It became the base for the RGM-79SP GM Sniper II, and its armour and backpack were easy to swap.
