Ranma Saotome

Ranma Saotome is the lead of Ranma 1/2, Rumiko Takahashi's martial arts comedy, serialised in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from 1987 to 1996 and animated again by MAPPA in 2024. He is 16, trained in the Anything-Goes school, and turns into a girl when cold water hits him.

What makes Ranma Saotome stand out

• The curse came from a training trip. At Jusenkyo in Qinghai, Ranma fell into the spring of a drowned girl. Cold water takes him to that form; hot water puts him back. His father Genma fell into the spring of a drowned panda.
• Anything-Goes martial arts. Genma trained him in the Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū, a school with almost no rules, and Ranma is good enough at it to have beaten a Chinese Amazon warrior in single combat.
• One engagement, several claimants. His father and Soun Tendo agreed to marry him to one of the Tendo daughters, and Akane was pushed into accepting. Shampoo and Ukyo Kuonji each consider themselves engaged to him as well.
