OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon

OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon is the duelling mobile suit Treize Khushrenada designed in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (1995, A.C. 195). Treize built it from Tallgeese data and Gundanium alloy gathered from the Gundams, and the machine passed from Heero Yuy to Zechs Merquise.

What it does in the story

Treize designed the Epyon while the Romefeller Foundation held him under house arrest, and he handed it to Heero when Heero came to kill him. Heero flew it during Romefeller's invasion of the Sanc Kingdom without having mastered its cockpit system, and after a stalemate duel with Zechs in the Wing Zero the two swapped machines. Zechs then took the Epyon to White Fang and flew it in the last battle around Libra.

What makes it different

  • It was built without ranged weapons. Treize left long-range weapons off on purpose, on the argument that a duel is decided at close quarters. Only later, once the suit had joined White Fang, were a pair of head-mounted vulcan guns added.
  • The beam sword draws on the reactor. A cord runs from the sword directly to the suit's powerplant instead of feeding it from an internal capacitor, so blade length and intensity can be set to the moment. At maximum output it is described as able to damage something the size of the space fortress Bulge.
  • The shield hides a heat rod. A segmented, whip-like rod is stowed in the shield. It can trip or entangle a target, and once heated it cuts through armour; a single sweep is credited with destroying as many as three Leos.
  • It becomes a dragon-shaped mobile armour. The mobile armour mode exists for high-speed flight and long cruising legs, and its shape reads as a mythological dragon. Nearly all the armament is unusable in that form apart from the forearm claws, which double as landing gear.
  • The Epyon System is a Zero System variant. Treize fitted a modified version of the Zero System to the cockpit, and the pilot wears a special helmet while it is running.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 17.4 m with a weight of 8.5 t, in Gundanium alloy, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12.1 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 17.4 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Who built the Epyon, and why?

Treize Khushrenada built it himself while under Romefeller house arrest, using data from the Tallgeese and material recovered from the Gundams. He wanted a machine that suited his own idea of an honourable fight, and he hoped a Gundam pilot would fly it.

2. Why does the Epyon have no guns?

Because Treize considered ranged fighting dishonourable and designed the suit around close combat. The White Fang later bolted a pair of head vulcans on, the only ranged weapon it ever carried.

3. Can the Epyon use its beam sword in mobile armour mode?

No. In that form only the forearm claws are usable, since the sword and heat rod cannot be brought to bear while flying.

4. What is the difference between the Epyon System and the Zero System?

It works the same way as the Zero System in the Wing Zero, and the pilot wears a helmet while using it. Any technical differences between the two have not been documented.
