ORX-005 Gaplant TR-5 Hrairoo

ORX-005 Gaplant TR-5 [Hrairoo] is the Titans Test Team's Gaplant, built at the Oakland Newtype Lab and flown by Wes Murphy in the photo-novel Advance of Zeta: The Flag of Titans (U.C. 0087).

What it does in the story

The TR-5 was put together as the core unit of the planned Gaplant TR-5 [Fiver], the section that survives once the enhancement blocks are purged. Near the end of the Gryps Conflict the same frame was reworked into the Hrairoo-Rah II, an area-dominance machine.

What makes it different

  • Booster shields replace the Gaplant's binders. The standard Gaplant's movable binders pull hard enough in flight that the machine was treated as one for enhanced pilots. The TR-5 swaps them for booster shields tested on the TR-1 [Hazel], bringing the load down to what an ordinary pilot can take.
  • It was tuned with Hazel combat data. The result, a thruster unit on the back with a booster shield on each arm, sits close to the Hazel's assault form because the test team's Hazel data went into it. It handles enough like a Hazel that Murphy can control it on his first ground sortie.
  • The rifle has a blade under the barrel. The long blade rifle is a beam pistol turned into a sniping weapon with a long barrel and stabiliser unit, with a heat blade underneath for close work.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 25.2 m according to Bandai's official spec, with an empty weight of 50.8 t and a full weight of 115.1 t
  • 1/144: roughly 17.5 cm, which covers the HGUC release

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Hrairoo just a Gaplant with a new name?

It is a Gaplant variant, and the changes are the point: booster shields in place of the movable binders, a hand-held long blade rifle, a sensor head with a V-fin, and a hybrid jet and rocket engine.

2. Where does the name Hrairoo come from?

From the Lapine language invented for Watership Down. Hrairoo is the name of the rabbit Fiver and means little thousand; the rah suffix on the later variant means prince or leader.

3. What does the Hrududu II add?

The FF-X39A support unit carries booster-equipped claw units on the shoulders with beam emitters that link to the long blade rifle to make a high-output beam cannon.

4. Is the Hrairoo-Rah II a separate machine?

It is the same frame taken further: booster shields back to movable binders, more thrusters and armour, spray beam emitters and two hidden arms.
