ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam

ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam is Orb's custom mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (Cosmic Era), built by Morgenröte and flown first by Cagalli Yula Athha, later by Mu La Flaga. This is the Oowashi version, fitted with the atmospheric Sky Pack.

What it does in the story

Cagalli flies it at the Second Battle of Orb with the Oowashi pack, after the machine's existence is finally revealed to her. Shinn Asuka's Destiny Gundam finds the answer to the gold armour: beam fire does nothing, but melee blows land. Cagalli later lends it to Mu, who takes the Shiranui pack into the Battle of Messiah.

What makes it different

• The armour is a mirror. Yata-no-Kagami is built from nanoscale beam diffraction gratings and plasma control layers, and with the suit's sensors it can track an incoming beam and send it back; it took a positron blaster cannon shot.
• It has no answer to a blade. Beam sabers and beam boomerangs cut through as on any other suit, and the coating has a limit, which is why the shield exists and its edges carry the same finish.
• The gold is a political colour. Gold is reserved for Orb's ruling class, so the finish is a statement about ownership rather than decoration.
• The Oowashi pack can fight alone. Four jet engines and two rocket boosters give subsonic flight, and the pack detaches as an unmanned aircraft under its own AI or the pilot's control, like the Justice's Fatum-00.

How big is it?

• Overall height: 18.74 m, at 69.6 t bare and 87.82 t with the Oowashi pack, per Bandai's official spec
• 1/144: roughly 13 cm
• 1/100: roughly 18.7 cm
