MVF-X08 Eclipse Gundam

MVF-X08 Eclipse Gundam is a transformable stealth mobile suit from the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Eclipse (Cosmic Era, C.E. 72). Orb built it in secret for the Orb Disaster Relief Team, and Tatsumi Hori pilots it. Two units are confirmed to exist.

What it does in the story

The Eclipse is a covert-operations machine: with Orb under Alliance control, the project was hidden as a "special machine of the Disaster Relief Team" under the Kiou family and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not the military. Tatsumi flies it against ZAFT and Alliance forces; a combined attack from a GINN Gladiator and an Aile Calamity Gundam leaves him coughing blood in chapter 12.

What makes it different

• It began as a plan for a strategic bomber. It was planned as a strategic bomber rather than a mobile suit, able to strike deep into enemy territory. Orb's symbol is the sun, and the name carries the sense that if the Eclipse came forward it would drop Orb into darkness.
• The rifles double as wings. The Type 72E4 beam rifles named Jinrai sit on the waist and act as stabiliser wings in MA form. Pulling the grips out of the rifles unsheathes the Type 72 beam sabers.
• The beam shields work as blades. A PS-02 beam shield on each arm serves as defence and can be used as an arm sword. The suit runs Phase Shift armour and a Mirage Colloid stealth system on the Freedom's frame structure.
• It mounts Strike Gundam Striker Packs. Weight was cut to make the flight form work, so the Eclipse carries only basic armaments. The back has a Striker Connect for the GAT-X105 Strike's packs, which also carry battery energy that recharges the suit.

How big is it?

• Overall height: 22.18 m, with a head height of 19.8 m, according to Bandai's published spec
• 1/100: roughly 22 cm, which covers the Master Grade release
