MSN-04II Nightingale

MSN-04II Nightingale is Char Aznable's mobile suit in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack — Beltorchika's Children, the novel version Yoshiyuki Tomino wrote in 1988 from his early draft of the film. In that telling the Sazabi does not exist and the Nightingale takes its place as the Neo Zeon leader's personal machine; Yutaka Izubuchi drew the original design.

What it does in the story

Char's rebellion runs much as it does on screen, with Axis driven toward Earth and the quarrel between Char and Amuro settled in person. The Nightingale overwhelms Amuro's Re-GZ when they first meet, and over Axis it faces the Hi-Nu Gundam as an equal rather than as an underdog.

What makes it different

  • It is shaped like a mobile armour. Psycho-Frame construction gave a machine the size of a mobile suit performance closer to a Newtype-use mobile armour, and the silhouette follows that logic: binders overhanging both shoulders, a large rear armour block and front armour as big as the legs. Thrusters placed across the shoulders and the rear armour are what keep it flyable.
  • Ten funnels hang on the binders. Five funnels are mounted on each movable binder, resized from the large funnels carried by the Alpha Azieru. Each holds a large-capacity condenser, which gives it more power and a longer working time than the cylindrical funnels used elsewhere.
  • The rifle is about 30 metres long. The large mega beam rifle fires a focused beam, a diffuse shotgun-like spread, or a high-output blast in launcher mode with a bipod and an external power source. Its focused shot is compared to a mega bazooka launcher.
  • There are arms hidden in the skirt. Four simplified manipulators sit behind the left and right front skirt armour, and each holds a beam saber. They let the suit put a blade on a target from an angle an opponent has not accounted for.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 27.8 m, with a head height of 22.5 m and a weight of 48.2 t
  • 1/144: roughly 19.3 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 27.8 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Nightingale the same machine as the Sazabi?

No. The Sazabi is the suit Char flies in the 1988 film; the Nightingale is the parallel design that replaces it in the novel, where the Sazabi is written out of the story entirely. Later material treats the Nightingale separately, as either that counterpart or as a development of the Sazabi.

2. Does the Nightingale appear in the animated film?

No. It belongs to Beltorchika's Children and to the CCA-MSV design line, and it reached animation only through later adaptations and games rather than the 1988 movie.

3. How many funnels does the Nightingale carry?

Ten, five on each shoulder binder. They are a resized version of the Alpha Azieru's funnels rather than the Sazabi's six.

4. Why is the Nightingale so much bigger than a normal mobile suit?

At 27.8 m overall it is a command machine built around a Psycho-Frame and a heavy long-range armament, with five propellant tanks for extended operations. Its proportions were drawn to read as a mobile armour even though it is classed as a mobile suit.
