MSM-10 Zock

MSM-10 Zock is a prototype amphibious assault mobile suit built by Zeon during the One Year War, introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079). California Base produced three of them for the planned invasion of Jaburo. Kunio Okawara designed it as something closer to a mobile gun platform than to a mobile suit.

What it does in the story

Only one Zock was committed, serving under Char Aznable's command during the assault on the Federation's underground headquarters at Jaburo on 30 November U.C. 0079. It fought inside the base and was destroyed there by Amuro Ray in the RX-78-2 Gundam. The two remaining airframes were never deployed.

What makes it different

  • It has no front and no back. The body is symmetrical fore and aft and carries a 360-degree mono-eye camera, so the machine does not need to turn around to bring its armament onto a target behind it.
  • Eight mega particle cannons fire both ways. Four muzzles face forward and four face back, each group covering 180 degrees of line of fire. The resulting barrage is compared in the source material to the firepower of a company of mobile suits.
  • It cannot walk. The legs are vestigial, and the suit moves by hovering or by jet-assisted jumps instead of striding. Later redesigns that give it four legs read as mobile armour rather than as a suit.
  • The roof gun covers what the cannons cannot. A phonon maser gun sits on top of the body and fires at targets above, the arc the horizontal cannon array cannot reach. It is most useful while the Zock is cruising underwater and the cannon lines are blocked.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 23.9 m at the head, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 17 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. How many Zocks were built?

Three, all at California Base, which Zeon had captured from the Federation early in the war. Only one was used in action, at Jaburo.

2. Why does it carry two sets of mega particle cannons?

Because the suit has no facing. With four cannons at each end it can fire while withdrawing as readily as while advancing, which suits a machine that moves by hovering rather than striding.

3. What are the iron nails?

A pair of claws mounted on each forearm, kept for the case where something gets close enough to grab. They can grapple a target or smash it rather than cut it.

4. Is the Thunderbolt Zock the same machine?

No. It is a separate design that reuses the model number. A four-legged, heavier reading appears in several games, and the Thunderbolt manga adopts a similar design under its own Zock entry.
