MSM-04N Agguguy

MSM-04N Agguguy is a limited-production amphibious mobile suit drawn up at California Base for Zeon's assault on Jaburo, first published in Mobile Suit Variation and animated only later, in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986, U.C. 0088). It is built on the MSM-04 Acguy and is meant for close-quarters work inside and around Federation facilities. Sorma Johanson is one of its named pilots.

What it does in the story

The few Agguguys assembled at California Base never took part in the Jaburo assault they were designed for. Char Aznable found a secret entrance to the underground base and Zeon attacked earlier than planned, which left the type on the wrong side of the schedule. After the One Year War a handful ended up with civilians at the Tigerbaum colony, and that is where Gundam ZZ puts them on screen.

What makes it different

  • The forearms swap out. The signature feature is interchangeable forearms. The standard fit is a pair of heat rods on each arm, and the same mount takes clawed hands, so one airframe can be re-roled between grappling and cutting without being rebuilt.
  • The heat rods grapple as well as shock. Each rod is a retractable cable that delivers a high-voltage charge on contact, enough to disrupt an enemy's internal systems and stun the pilot. Superheating the cable also gives it a cutting edge, so the same weapon covers capture and damage.
  • It is heavy and still described as agile. Bandai lists 113.7 t dry and 171.6 t fully loaded, with a maximum underwater speed of 50 knots. The armour is thick, yet the machine is written as quick for its size, which is what makes a grappling role workable.
  • The head guns are for sensors, not armour. The two 20mm vulcans cannot defeat mobile suit plating. They exist to damage lightly armoured areas such as sensor heads and to shoot down missiles and light vehicles that the heat rods are too slow to reach.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 19.0 m at the head, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 13 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Why did the Agguguy miss the Battle of Jaburo?

The attack went in early. Char Aznable located a secret entrance to the underground headquarters and Zeon moved much sooner than planned, so the Agguguys built for the assault never joined it.

2. How does it differ from the Acguy it was based on?

The Agguguy is the close-combat reading of the same hull, built for grappling with heat rods and claws. The Acguy stays the general-purpose amphibious machine of the two.

3. Where does the Agguguy actually appear?

It began in Mobile Suit Variation, the design series, and reached animation much later in Gundam ZZ, at the Tigerbaum colony. It also fights an RGM-79FP GM Striker in the manga We're Federation Hooligans!!.

4. Can it operate underwater?

Yes. It is classed as an amphibious machine, and Bandai's spec gives it a maximum submerged speed of 50 knots.
