MS-14S Gelgoog Commander Type, first designated YMS-14, is the pre-production Gelgoog Zeonic built for Zeon's ace pilots in Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079). Twenty-five were finished in October of that year, twenty-four for the Chimera Corps and one for Char Aznable.
What it does in the story
Char took it to Texas Colony and fought Amuro Ray's RX-78-2 Gundam twice, and its speed and beam weapons made the contest closer than Zeon's earlier suits managed. After it was wrecked he moved to the Zeong.
What makes it different
The Y means prototype, and it was dropped.
Zeon built the first twenty-five as YMS-14S and removed the Y once the design was settled, redesignating them MS-14S. The mass-produced MS-14A that followed trades speed for armour.
Twenty-four of twenty-five went to one unit.
The Chimera Corps, Zeon's ace pilot corps, took nearly the whole first run. The machine left over was Char's, which is why the type reads as a commander's suit.
It was Zeon's first line suit with a beam rifle.
The rifle used Federation energy CAP data obtained through Side 6, and the Gelgoog was the first beam rifle in Zeon's mass-production programme.
The sword emits from both ends.
The twin beam sword is about as long as two sabre hilts, with an emitter at each tip, so it runs two blades or one. It is I-field contained and stows on the back.
How big is it?
Head height: 19.2 m, per Bandai's official spec
1/144: roughly 13.3 cm

Frequently asked questions
1. How does it differ from the mass-production Gelgoog?
The MS-14S is the twenty-five-unit pre-production run, built for speed. The MS-14A was beefed up on pilot feedback and gives up some of that speed.
2. What happened to Char's Gelgoog?
It was repaired with an MS-14B thruster pack and an MS-14F right arm, as told in Char's Deleted Affair. After A Baoa Qu it was reworked at Axis as the MS-14U.
3. What is a twin beam sword?
A long handle with an emitter at both ends, so it can produce one blade or two and reach further than a sabre, which has a single emitter.
4. Why is the shield stored on the back?
It is arm-mounted and hangs on the back when not in use, keeping the hands free. An anti-beam coating lets it absorb beam hits rather than only solid ones.
