MS-14JG Gelgoog Jager

MS-14JG Gelgoog Jäger — also written Gelgoog J, and known as the Gelgoog Sniper Type — is the precision-firing Gelgoog from Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. Zeon finished it at the end of the One Year War, in very limited numbers, as a commander-use machine.

What it does in the story

The Jäger is built around precision firing. Its service record is thin; the clearest account is Shin Matsunaga's machine, which he collected from an industrial plant colony after escaping arrest and used to intercept an anti-ship missile aimed at the plant.

What makes it different

  • It carries twenty-four thrusters just for attitude. On top of the main engines, 24 posture-control sub-thrusters are spread over the body, which is where its space mobility comes from. Total thrust is 178,500 kg.
  • The monoeye was widened for the sniper role. Its camera has a wider field of vision than a standard Gelgoog's, and as a commander machine it wears a blade antenna on the head by default.
  • The beam machine gun fires two ways. It can throw pulsed beam pellets or a single long-range beam. Beam deterioration is low in long-range mode, and the scope and fire control place one shot rather than spraying.
  • The forearm guns are a stopgap. Two beam spot guns, one per forearm, were still in development. They hamper an enemy at range and are lethal only at point-blank, though each can also put out a beam blade.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 19.2 m at 80.3 t gross and 40.5 t dry, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 13.3 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Gelgoog Jäger the same as the Gelgoog J?

Yes. Gelgoog J is the short form, and Sniper Type comes from its precision-firing role. All three names refer to one suit.

2. How is it different from the Gelgoog Cannon?

The Cannon is a fire-support machine with a backpack beam cannon and a full weapons set. The Jäger is a sniper with one large beam machine gun and a wider monoeye.

3. Why does it have external propellant tanks?

They are optional, and a pair on the back extends operating time in space by about 200 percent, letting a sniper machine sit and wait for the shot.

4. What is significant about Shin Matsunaga's Jäger?

It is the only Jäger with a detailed account in the setting, and the one the P-Bandai 1/144 kit builds. Matsunaga used it to intercept an anti-ship missile, then took it to Solomon.
