MS-08TX Efreet

MS-08TX Efreet is a Principality of Zeon ground-combat prototype from the One Year War, introduced in the game Mobile Suit Gundam: Cross Dimension 0079 (U.C. 0079). Zeon's Earth Attack Force developed it independently of the mainline Zaku line, and its number places it between the MS-07 Gouf and the MS-09 Dom. Henry Boone and Doug Schneid are among its pilots.

What it does in the story

Henry Boone, leader of the Wolf Gar Team, commanded Operation Desert Dragon from an Efreet in an attempt to take the Albatross Transport Base in the Gobi Desert. Doug Schneid of the Marchosias Corps flew a purple example with a gatling gun grafted to its left forearm and a heat lancer. His machine survived the war and passed to Zeon remnants.

What makes it different

  • It fights with power rather than technique. Where the Gouf is a technical fighter built around fixed armament, the Efreet leans on high thrust and high output with purpose-built hand weapons. Its thrust is quoted as higher than the Gelgoog's.
  • Only eight were built. Production stopped at eight units. Zeon's leadership was putting resources into space-use mobile suits, and the Efreet was awkward to operate and hard to manufacture. The design left enough margin for several versions anyway.
  • It carries two heat swords at once. One mounts on each side skirt, so a pilot can keep a reserve blade or fight with one in each hand. The blade is heated rather than energised, like the Zaku's heat hawk, and it is shaped differently from the Gouf's.
  • The smoke dischargers are the point. Four dischargers can blanket an area in thick smoke, which is how the suit is meant to work: close in under cover, destroy the target and withdraw before the cloud clears. The shotgun and the 360 mm Giant Bazooka finish the job quickly.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 17.2 m, 18.1 m overall, per Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 11.9 cm at head height
  • 1/100: roughly 17.2 cm at head height

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Efreet a variant of the Gouf?

No, it is a separate design from Zeon's Earth Attack Force rather than a Gouf variant. The difference shows in the weapons: the Gouf relies on fixed armament, the Efreet on hand-held gear built for it.

2. How many Efreets were produced?

Eight. Production was cancelled because Zeon's priority had moved to space-use machines and because the suit was hard to handle and hard to build. The spare design margin is why so many modified versions exist.

3. What is the Efreet Custom?

A heavily modified Efreet fitted with the EXAM system and flown by Nimbus Schterzen in Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny. It shares the base machine, not the armament or the performance.

4. Why does Doug Schneid's Efreet look different?

It is a commander's custom job: purple paint, a triple 35 mm gatling gun on the left forearm taken from the Gouf Custom's equipment, and a heat lancer for reach. The frame underneath is the standard MS-08TX.
