MS-07B Gouf is Zeon's ground-combat mobile suit in Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079). Zeonic developed it as a full rework of the ground type Zaku II, and the machine that introduced it belongs to Ramba Ral.
What it does in the story
Ramba Ral's Gouf appears in episode 12, unnamed until episode 16, and Amuro registers it as something new because its armour and output do not behave like a Zaku's. Episode 19 gives it its one heat-saber duel with the Gundam: the Gouf cuts through the Gundam's shield, and the exchange ends with a beam saber through the Gouf's back while Ral escapes by hooking a cable onto the Gundam. Eight mass-production Goufs sortie under M'Quve in episode 22, half of them lost.
What makes it different
It is a rework of the ground type Zaku, not a clean-sheet design.
Zeonic took the ground type Zaku II, the J type, and rebuilt it for close combat, to the point that more than sixty percent of the machine is new. The blade antenna that only Zaku commander types carried became standard on the Gouf.
Two of its three main weapons are built into the body.
The heat rod is an extendable electromagnetic whip listed at 17.5 m overall, the five-barrel 75 mm machine gun sits in the fingers of the left hand, and the heat saber is stowed inside the shield. Only the saber is hand-held in the ordinary sense.
The shield exists because the left hand is a gun.
The Gouf Shield is designed around the fact that the left hand barely works as a manipulator, so it is built for close-range defence first, with a mount latch on the back for the heat saber.
It never became the mainstay.
Handling difficulty and operating cost kept it out of mass issue, production lines were cut back after Odessa, and the Dom took over as the Zaku's replacement. Aces who valued its jump performance kept flying it anyway.
How big is it?
Head height: 18.5 m for the MS-07B, with the YMS-07B prototype listed at 18.2 m
1/144: roughly 12.8 cm, scaling from the official 18.5 m head height
1/100: roughly 18.5 cm on the same scaling

Frequently asked questions
1. Is Ramba Ral's Gouf a standard MS-07B?
No. His machine is the YMS-07B, the third prototype. The mass-production MS-07B is the version that appears in numbers later, eight of them under M'Quve in episode 22.
2. How does the Gouf Custom fit into this page?
The Gouf Custom is the MS-07B-3 from Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, flown by Norris Packard. It is a later variant and its kits are collected here, but it is not the 1979 machine.
3. Why does the Gouf carry a shield when the Zaku II does not?
Because the left hand is a fixed weapon. With no real manipulator on that side, Zeon gave the machine a defence-first shield that also carries the heat saber on its back.
4. Do the Gouf kits include figures?
The MG 1/100 Gouf Ver.2.0 includes same-scale figures of Ramba Ral and Crowley Hamon. It also mounts the heat rod on a ball joint and slides the front armour back with the side armour so the knee can be raised cleanly.
