MS-06F Zaku Minelayer

MS-06F Zaku Minelayer is a space variant of the MS-06F Zaku II, designed by Kunio Okawara for the Mobile Suit Variations design series rather than for the anime. It is not a new mobile suit: it is a standard Zaku II with its backpack swapped for a minelaying unit, used by Zeon and the 7th Panzer Division.

What it does in the story

As an MSV design it has no battles in the original animation; its job was to give the Zaku II a support role in the printed variations line. It finally appeared on screen in Gundam Build Divers Prologue.

What makes it different

  • The backpack carries drums of space mines. Twelve mines fit in each drum, and the drums scatter them across a wide area quickly, work that would be slow and dangerous by hand.
  • It carries five times the fuel. The minelaying backpack adds manoeuvring thrusters and a much larger fuel load, so handling and operating time improve along with the new job.
  • The trade-off is where it operates from. Reloading, launching or landing needs a special loading area aboard a Musai-class ship, which ties the machine to its carrier.
  • It keeps the Zaku II's standard weapons. A right-shoulder shield, the 120 mm machine gun with 100 rounds per drum, a heat hawk, and optionally the 280 mm Zaku Bazooka.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 17.5 m according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. How many mines does a Zaku Minelayer carry?

Twelve per drum. The sources describe the drums without fixing how many a full loadout holds, so the total depends on the configuration.

2. Why lay mines from a mobile suit at all?

Area denial in space: the mines wait for ships to pass through them, the same principle as naval mines. A suit carrying drums can place them far faster than laying them by hand, which the sources describe as slow and dangerous.

3. What kits exist of the Zaku Minelayer?

The original 1/144 MSV release from 1984, a 1/100 Master Grade in 2008, and a 1/144 Real Grade sold as a P-Bandai exclusive in 2018.
