MS-05S Char's Zaku I is Char Aznable's own Zaku I in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, the retelling of the One Year War set in U.C. 0079. It is not the 1979 television machine: this is an MS-05 fitted with MS-06 Zaku II equipment and issued to Zeon's Lunar Attack Force.
What it does in the story
Char flies it in the Battle of Von Braun during the One Week Battle, where a single suit bombards a Magellan-class battleship. The manual has him working the belt-fed gun, belt racking into the chamber, while on a call with Lalah Sune.
What makes it different
It is a Zaku I in Zaku II equipment.
The spiked shoulder, the right-shoulder shield and the belt-fed gun were developed for the MS-06. The war began before the Zaku II reached full production, so Zaku Is went out with that gear.
The ammunition rides on its back.
The belt feeds from a box magazine under the backpack instead of a drum, which holds far more rounds. The backpack itself is the MS-06 unit, with two thrusters and two verniers.
The shield changed shoulders.
The MS-05 carried its shield on the forearm; the S type moves it to the right shoulder, where it covers a wider area. The left shoulder gains a spike in exchange, for ramming.
Its colour is not red.
The machine is described as twilight-coloured rather than red, and the manual treats that scheme as a foretaste of the Red Comet.
How big is it?
Head height: 17.4 m, with an overall width of 9.0 m, per Bandai's official spec
1/144: roughly 12 cm

Frequently asked questions
1. Is it the same as Char's Zaku II?
No. This is an MS-05S, a Zaku I airframe with Zaku II equipment, from The Origin. The MS-06S Zaku II is a different machine with a different head and armament.
2. Where does the MS-05S appear?
In The Origin manga and its OVA adaptation, and in Mobile Suit Discovery. It is not in the 1979 television series.
3. What weapons does it carry?
A belt-fed machine gun and a heat hawk as standard, with a drum-fed gun and a Type A1 bazooka as options.
4. Why the spike on the shoulder?
The left shoulder armour was given a spike for ramming, part of the same package that added the wider shield.
