MS-05L Zaku I Sniper Type is a long-range variant of the MS-05B Zaku I, designed by Hajime Katoki for Harmony of Gundam and later animated in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. Zeon's California Base built it late in the One Year War by retrofitting Zaku I airframes reduced to transport and engineering work.
What it does in the story
Zeon's ground forces had relied on Magella Top Guns for sniping, which lacked precision and firepower, and the request for something better came after Garma Zabi's death. In the war's last months the type ran guerrilla actions that slowed the Federation advance, and in U.C. 0096 a custom machine under Yonem Kirks supported the Torrington Base raid from inside a Fat Uncle Custom.
What makes it different
The rifle needs a generator of its own.
The beam sniper rifle is powered by a backpack sub-generator rated at 700 kW, developed from the Gelgoog Cannon's technology, and its barrel overheats after several shots and must be swapped.
Its monoeye comes from a reconnaissance Zaku.
The head uses the same composite monoeye as the MS-06E Zaku Reconnaissance Type, which supplies the sensor range for long-range shooting.
The right knee unfolds into a monopod.
When the suit kneels to fire, the foldable knee pad extends outward and steadies the machine like a rifle rest.
How big is it?
Head height: 17.5 m according to Bandai's official spec
1/144: roughly 12 cm

Frequently asked questions
1. Who was Yonem Kirks?
The leader of the Zeon remnants who attacked Torrington Base in U.C. 0096, and the pilot of a custom Zaku I Sniper Type. His machine was roughly two decades old by then and still took out multiple modern Federation units.
2. Is the Zaku I Sniper Type a new production machine?
No. It is a retrofit of the obsolete MS-05 Zaku I, built at California Base with beam weapon technology first developed for the Gelgoog, and it reached service in small numbers late in the war.
3. Which kit covers the Zaku I Sniper Type?
A 1/144 HGUC release from 2006, and a Yonem Kirks version in 2012. The Kirks kit is the only HGUC release that needs cement for complete assembly.
