The Moogle is a recurring creature of Final Fantasy, Square Enix's role-playing series. It first turned up in Final Fantasy III in 1990, designed by Koichi Ishii: white fur, small bat wings, a pom-pom on a stalk, and a habit of saying kupo.
What makes Moogle stand out
Drawn before it was designed.
Ishii built the creature from drawings he made in elementary school, imagining an all-white koala with bat wings that could inflate itself to float. The name is read as the Japanese words for bat and mole.
It talks.
Moogles speak, which the Chocobo does not. Their cry settled into kupo by Final Fantasy V in 1992, and they keep in contact through a network called Mognet.
Amano fixed the silhouette.
Yoshitaka Amano redesigned the Moogle for Final Fantasy VI in 1994, adding the slit eyes and the pom-pom antenna. Later artists, Toshiyuki Itahana and Ryoma Ito among them, worked from that.
Named moogles keep coming back.
Mog is a party member in Final Fantasy VI and returns in Final Fantasy IX and XIII-2. Montblanc runs the clan in the Ivalice games, and Final Fantasy XIV has Good King Moggle Mog.
What this collection covers
