Mash

Mash is one of the three pilots of the Black Tri-Stars in Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079), alongside Gaia and Ortega. He is a Principality of Zeon officer who first appears in episode 24, "Black Tri-Star".

What it does in the story

Mash flew mobile suits before the war, in a dark blue Zaku I with the Mobile Training Battalion. With Gaia and Ortega he formed the Tri-Stars before Loum, where the team's Jet Stream Attack sank five Federation battleships, and the trio later moved to Zaku II High Mobility Types and then to Doms on Earth.

What makes it different

  • His reputation is a team tactic, not a personal score. The Jet Stream Attack sends the three machines in sequence, so a defender who dodges one attacker moves into the next one's line. It only works while all three hold formation, which is why the Tri-Stars are remembered as a unit rather than as three aces.
  • He is tied to three different machines. Zaku I in the training battalion, Zaku II High Mobility Type in space, and the Dom once the team deployed to Earth in October U.C. 0079. The black, purple and grey scheme the trio adopted after Loum is what most depictions of his suits use.

Frequently asked questions

1. Who are the other two Black Tri-Stars?

Gaia, who leads the team, and Ortega. The three fly together from before the Battle of Loum until the fighting on Earth.

2. Which mobile suits did Mash pilot?

He starts on the Zaku I, moves to the Zaku II High Mobility Type with the rest of the team, and takes a Dom for the ground campaign in October U.C. 0079.

3. Is this the Mash from the TV series or from The Origin?

The 1979 TV series. The Origin retelling covers the same period with its own version of the trio, and that version of the character is documented separately, so the machines and episodes here follow the original run.
