Mai Shiranui

Mai Shiranui is a kunoichi from SNK's fighting games, introduced in Fatal Fury 2 in 1992 and a fixture of The King of Fighters ever since. She inherits the Shiranui family's ninjutsu style and has become a mascot for SNK as a whole.

What makes Mai Shiranui stand out

• She was almost a male ninja. The original concept was a male character called Ninja Master. Partway through, SNK added a female fighter, dropped that design and rebuilt the role around Mai.
• The outfit is the signature. Designed by Takuya Yamashita, Mai wears a red uwagi with an extended loincloth and a decorative sash tied in a butterfly knot at the back. Her hair is a long ponytail held by an ornate pin.
• Fans, flames and acrobatics. Her style mixes family ninjutsu with hand-to-hand work: a diving attack, a cartwheel kick into an elbow strike, flames on several moves, and large folding fans thrown as projectiles.
• She keeps coming back. SNK considered replacing her for Fatal Fury 3, then brought her back after fan requests; she has appeared in nearly every entry since.
