Magellan

The Magellan is the Earth Federation Forces' space battleship class from Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079), commissioned in U.C. 0070 under the service's 0070s build-up. The ships were built to carry admirals as fleet flagships.

What it does in the story

The class went into action on 3 January U.C. 0079, when the Federation fleet tried to stop Operation British and was beaten by Zeon mobile suits. Loum repeated the pattern. At Solomon, Magellan and Salamis squadrons finally won a gun duel against a Gwazine-class force.

What makes it different

  • Seven twin mega particle turrets, spread over three faces of the hull. Two sit at the bow above and below, one forward of the main bridge, and four around the engine block. The layout gives 360-degree cover up and down, but every main turret overlaps only in a narrow arc off the bow, leaving a blind spot astern.
  • The main guns were shell cannons first. The turrets began as solid-shell weapons and became twin mega particle guns in the class's first modernisation. Anti-aircraft machine guns and missile launchers stayed on as the close-in layer.
  • Minovsky particles took away the job it was built for. The class was designed for long-range gunnery directed by radar and guided missiles. Under Minovsky interference the fire-control system stopped working, and with no mobile suits aboard the ships had little answer to Zeon machines.
  • Later refits bolted mobile suit capacity on. Conversions added stowage for a handful of suits in cargo bays and on the hull, with no facilities to rearm or repair them. That let the class fight Zeon ships on more even terms later in the war.

How big is it?

  • Length: 327 m in the MS IGLOO materials; the 1981 Gundam Manual gives 265 m
  • Beam: 94.5 m (67.1 m in the 1981 manual)
  • Height: 88.0 m (80.2 m in the 1981 manual)

Frequently asked questions

1. How long is a Magellan-class battleship?

327 m in the MS IGLOO setting materials. The earlier 1981 manual lists 265 m, and both figures are still printed, so the shorter number is not a mistake.

2. How many mobile suits did it carry?

None by design. Wartime refits gave the class stowage for about four to six machines, carried in converted cargo space or on the outer hull, without equipment to service them.

3. Why did the class fare so badly in the One Year War?

It was built for long-range detection and missile and gun engagements, and Minovsky particle tactics removed both assumptions at once. Its fire control could not work through the interference, and it had no mobile suits of its own.

4. What is the capsule under the bow?

A small shuttle able to make atmospheric re-entry; the Ananke's crew tried to escape in it at Loum. A rocket booster could also be fitted to the main thrusters so a ship could climb out of Earth's atmosphere.
