MA-08 Big Zam

MA-08 Big Zam is a Principality of Zeon mobile armor from Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079), and the MA prefix matters: it is a disc-shaped assault machine on two legs with a three-person crew, not a mobile suit. Zeon completed a single unit to break fortresses, and Dozle Zabi took it into the Battle of Solomon on 24 December U.C. 0079.

What it does in the story

The machine was designed around attacking fortified positions, with the Federation headquarters at Jaburo named as its intended target. At Solomon its main gun sank a Magellan-class battleship in one shot, and the barrier shrugged off the fleet's beam fire while the anti-air battery kept mobile suits away. What it cannot do is fight at close range: the guns do not cover the space directly above, below or alongside the hull, and that gap is the only way in.

What makes it different

  • It was the first mobile weapon with an I-field generator. The barrier repels mega particle beams, which is why the Federation fleet's fire did so little at Solomon. The generator drew so much power that only a machine of this size could carry it.
  • The claws on its legs are missiles. Three per leg, each close to the size of a mobile suit, and they are not explosive. They are built to crush a target with their mass, and they cover the undercarriage that the beam battery cannot reach.
  • Four reactors buy it about twenty minutes. Four Minovsky ultracompact fusion reactors at 35,000 kW each feed the beam battery, which is what makes simultaneous fire from every gun possible. Cooling is the limit: at full combat output the machine can run for under twenty minutes.
  • Three crew sit in the upper torso. Pilot, radar operator and gunner each have a station, though computers let one person run the machine alone. A hull this size cannot be fought from a single seat the way a mobile suit can.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 59.6 m according to Bandai's official spec
  • Mass: 1,936.0 t fully loaded, 1,021.2 t empty

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Big Zam a mobile suit?

No. The MA prefix marks it as a mobile armor: a non-humanoid assault machine with a three-person crew, built to attack fortresses rather than to duel other machines.

2. How many mega particle guns ring the hull?

Reference books give 26 in some editions and 28 in others, so the count is not settled. The ring surrounds the middle of the torso and exists to give 360-degree cover against machines that dodge the main gun.

3. Why is the Big Zam's fighting time so short?

Heat. The four reactors and the beam battery generate more than the cooling system can carry, so full combat output is limited to under twenty minutes.

4. Does the I-field stop missiles and shells?

It is built to repel mega particles, so beam fire is what it defeats. Solid weapons are the other case, which is why the machine also carries the leg missiles and a pair of 105 mm vulcan guns.
