LGZ-91 Lightning Gundam

LGZ-91 Lightning Gundam is Yuuma Kousaka's Gunpla in Gundam Build Fighters Try (2014). He built it on the RGZ-91 Re-GZ from Char's Counterattack, and it carries the team's long-range work for Try Fighters in the All-Japan Under-19 tournament.

What it does in the story

Yuuma flies it through the tournament qualifiers as the squad's shooter, handled as the machine that reaches what the close-in suits cannot. A loss to Saga Adou leaves him shaken, and a match against Meijin Kawaguchi is what gets him back to building. The result is the LGZ-91Fb Lightning Gundam Full Burnern, which replaces the original from the later rounds onward.

What makes it different

• The shoulders are the sensor suite. High-performance sensors sit in the shoulders, and pairing the long-barrel beam rifle with them is what makes the suit's precise long shots possible. Long-range attack is the tactic the machine is built around, with everything else there to keep it alive while it works.
• The shield doubles as a rest. It mounts on the left forearm but comes off to stand as a bipod when Yuuma is shooting at distance, and it can lock onto the nose of the back weapon system. A pair of beam vulcans sit inside it for sweeping fire that catches a wide area.
• The backpack can fly on its own. The Lightning Back Weapon System is an evolution of the booster the Re-GZ carried, and it works as a separate support machine for scouting and fire support. Fitted to the suit and with the shield repositioned, it turns the pair into a flight mode with enough thrust to carry another Gunpla on top.
• The rifle is a handgun with extra barrels. The base weapon is a small handgun that stays useful in close combat because it fires quickly. Bolting on a barrel unit makes it the standard beam rifle, and a longer barrel with its own sensor unit makes it a sniping piece.
