Kusuriuri

Kusuriuri, the Medicine Seller, is the nameless wandering protagonist of Mononoke, Toei Animation's 2007 spin-off of the 2006 anthology Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. He travels a Japan caught between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji era, selling medicine and exorcising what he meets.

What makes Kusuriuri stand out

• Katachi, makoto, kotowari. He cannot draw his sword until he has the mononoke's shape, its truth, and the reason it exists. Everything before that is stalling: ofuda charms, a scale that reads supernatural presence, and questions.
• The box. A large wooden medicine box carries his stock, holy tools, and the sword in a smaller inner box. The film trilogy treats it as opening into another space.
• Sixty-four sellers, sixty-four swords. Director Kenji Nakamura's account puts 64 Medicine Sellers in the world, one for each hexagram of the I Ching, each with its own sword. The one in the series carries Ri.
• The face and the kimono. A deliberately androgynous figure: a kimono with motifs on the sleeves, geta, a round sun mirror on the chest, painted markings around the eyes, pointed ears and sharp canines.
