Kratos

Kratos leads Santa Monica Studio's God of War, a series running since 2005 through two mythologies. He begins as a Spartan warrior in ancient Greece who becomes its god of war, then reappears in Scandinavia as a widowed father raising a son.

What makes Kratos stand out

• Ashes and tattoos. His skin is ash. After Ares tricked him into killing his wife and daughter, an oracle cursed Kratos to wear their remains, which earns him the name Ghost of Sparta. The red tattoo curling from his left eye to his shoulder honours his dead brother Deimos.
• Two weapon sets. The Greek games run on the Blades of Chaos, chained blades he throws and reels back. The Norse games hand him the Leviathan Axe, which belonged to his second wife, Laufey, Atreus's mother; Ragnarök adds a magical spear.
• Fatherhood replaced vengeance. The 2018 game and Ragnarök (2022) are about keeping his rage away from his child, not settling a score. He teaches Atreus to hunt and to hold his temper while the two try to stop Ragnarök from consuming the nine realms.
