Knight Gundam GP01 Jr.

Knight Gundam GP01 is the lead character of SD Gundam Gaiden: Seikihei Monogatari, the 1992 chapter whose cast is drawn from Stardust Memory and F91. His design basis is the GP01 Zephyranthes. The small kit version is CB-004 in the SD Gundam Chibi Senshi line, hence the Jr. suffix.

What it does in the story

He starts as the squire of Heavy Knight GP02 and ends as the pilot of the Holy Machine Soldier Gunrex. Gunrex activates only for him among the knights who try it, and Queen Nina makes him a full knight and its official pilot. After Dabat falls, Knight Amuro names him a Vassal, and in the last battle he merges with Superior Dragon.

What makes it different

  • He is a squire before he is a hero. The opening chapters put him behind GP02, whose objection to being passed over for the Gunrex seat pushes him toward Neo Zeon.
  • Two titles, one character. Knight Gundam GP01 becomes Vassal Knight Gundam GP01, and the merged form with Superior Dragon is listed as Vassal Lord Superior Gundam.
  • The animated version changed a key scene. In the SD Gundam Festival film, GP01 finds Cecily's earring, a beat the original gives to Burning Knight F91.
  • The kit is a small one. Chibi Senshi releases were made much smaller than regular SD Gundam kits, and the line ran from 1992 to 1994. CB-004 came out in August 1992.

How big is it?

  • Kit height: about 45 mm, the average across the Chibi Senshi line

Frequently asked questions

1. Is Knight Gundam GP01 the same character as Knight Gundam?

No. Knight Gundam is the lead of the earlier knight chapters. GP01 belongs to the Dabat kingdom story and only shares the knight framing.

2. Why does the kit say Jr.?

Every release in the Chibi Senshi line carries the suffix, because these are much smaller versions of established SD characters. In the manga the character is simply Knight Gundam GP01.

3. What does he actually pilot?

The Holy Machine Soldier Gunrex, a sealed machine that needs a specific pilot rather than a strong one. He is the only knight who can control it.
