K.I.T.T. is the Knight Industries Two Thousand, the car at the centre of Knight Rider, which ran from 1982 to 1986. The body is a modified 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, built for the show by the customiser Michael Scheffe, and the voice is William Daniels.
What it does in the story
Michael Knight, played by David Hasselhoff, works for the Foundation for Law and Government, and KITT is his partner rather than his transport. The two argue, and the car drives itself when it has to.
What makes it different
-
The red bar in the nose.
The front scanner is called the Anamorphic Equalizer, a fibre-optic array reading across visual, infrared and X-ray wavelengths. It sweeps while KITT is thinking, and the idea came from the Cylon eye in Battlestar Galactica.
-
A shell that stops bullets.
KITT's body is coated in the Molecular Bonded Shell, a plasteel compound that turns aside small arms and explosives. Artillery is about the only thing that gets through.
-
Turbo Boost.
Rockets behind the front wheels lift the car over obstacles and can push it past 200 mph. In the show's numbers it reaches 60 mph in two seconds.
-
Super Pursuit Mode.
Added in the fourth season, SPM extends the spoilers, opens extra cooling inlets and raises top speed by around 40 percent.
