ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam is Athrun Zala's mobile suit in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002–2003, C.E. 71), built by ZAFT on data from the GAT series it had captured. Bandai describes it as a machine designed as a pair with the Freedom, carrying the same Neutron Jammer Canceller and Phase Shift armour that never powers down. Athrun receives it mid-series and later leaves ZAFT with it.
What it does in the story
The Justice enters the war as ZAFT's counterpart to the Freedom, and Athrun is ordered to recover the Freedom or destroy it. He refuses, is arrested by his father's officers and freed by the Clyne faction, taking the Justice with him. The Clyne faction's ship Eternal was built to carry both machines, and the Freedom and Justice operate from it as a pair.
What makes it different
-
It was built from captured GAT data.
ZAFT developed the Justice using data from the GAT series it captured at Heliopolis — the prototype machines built for the Earth Forces. Bandai names that stolen data as the suit's origin, making the Justice a ZAFT machine with an Earth Forces ancestry.
-
It is one half of a matched pair.
Bandai's site calls the Justice the Freedom's sister unit, while the SEED pages call it the Freedom's brother unit: two machines developed together. Both run a Neutron Jammer Canceller with Phase Shift armour that stays active.
-
The backpack is a flight unit in its own right.
The Fatum-00 on the back is the Justice's defining piece of equipment. On the Master Grade it opens into a flight form and can carry the suit; on the Real Grade the lifters slide so the main cannon reaches the shoulder without removing the pack.
-
The shoulder armour doubles as throwing weapons.
The front of each shoulder holds a Basell beam boomerang, and on the Real Grade the shoulder tips detach so the weapon can be shown in flight. The Master Grade includes two, plus two Rakeruta sabres and a Lupus beam rifle.

Frequently asked questions
1. Is the Infinite Justice the same mobile suit as this Justice?
No. The ZGMF-X09A Justice is Athrun Zala's machine in SEED, in C.E. 71. The Infinite Justice is the ZGMF-X19A built for SEED Destiny two years later, and the Infinite Justice Type II and the Immortal Justice belong to the 2024 film SEED FREEDOM.
2. Why do Justice kits from later series show up under this name?
Because the name has carried four generations of machines, and Bandai has released kits of all of them under it. This page covers the ZGMF-X09A only; the later suits have their own backpacks, armament and pilots.
3. How is the Justice related to the Freedom?
They were designed as a pair: both use a Neutron Jammer Canceller and Phase Shift armour that never shuts off, and both are ZAFT machines from the same technological base. The Freedom is Kira Yamato's, the Justice is Athrun Zala's.
4. Which grades of Justice kit has Bandai made?
High Grade in 2003 and a remastered R14 version in 2012, Real Grade as the ninth kit in that line, and Master Grade in 2017 — the suit's first. There are also ungraded 1/100 and 1/144 releases, a BB Senshi kit, and Tamashii Nations Metal Build and Metal Robot Spirits figures.
