GW-9800 Gundam Air Master

GW-9800 Gundam Airmaster is the transformable Gundam of After War Gundam X (1996, A.W. 0015), one of the machines the United Nations Earth built for the 7th Space War. Its Trans System folds it into a flight form called Fighter Mode, and the suit was issued to Newtype pilots with the spatial awareness for three-dimensional combat. Witz Sou pilots one for the Freeden's crew.

What it does in the story

Witz acquired his Airmaster from a Vulture leader who had watched him pilot, and flew it for hire to support his family before joining the Freeden's crew in exchange for protection of his gold. The machine is wrecked in a fight with a pair of New United Nations Earth Gadeel mobile armours, then rebuilt as the Airmaster Burst.

What makes it different

  • The canopy in Fighter Mode is not a canopy. The panel that looks like a cockpit on the fighter shape is a sensor. The leg thrusters become the main engines in that form while the other verniers steer, which is why the change is instant rather than staged.
  • It gave up firepower to stay light. Weight was cut through the frame and the armament to protect mobility, so it carries little portable weaponry and has no beam sabers: melee means kicks and punches. Luna Titanium armour that holds up to beam fire is the compensation.
  • Its rifles weigh half what a standard beam rifle does. The buster rifles are built from the same Luna Titanium as the armour, halving their weight without losing beam power. In Fighter Mode each latches to the outside of a forearm and fires from there.
  • It was built to lead remote machines. The Airmaster carries the same Flash System as the other Gundams of its generation, letting a Newtype pilot direct GW-Bits. Twelve of them, with the same Trans System and armament, formed its squadron during the war.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 17.2 m, 6.9 t, per Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 11.9 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 17.2 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Does the Airmaster transform in mid-air?

Yes, and the change is immediate. Mobile Suit Mode is for slower close-range work and ground fighting, Fighter Mode for long-distance high-speed flight and fast combat, and the pilot picks between them as the situation changes.

2. Why does the Airmaster have no beam saber?

Because of the weight reduction. Every kilogram saved went into mobility, and a saber with its capacitor and mounting hardware was judged not worth the cost, so close combat means kicks and punches. The head vulcans and shoulder missiles cover the gap.

3. What is the difference between the Airmaster and the Airmaster Burst?

The Burst is the same machine after repair, numbered GW-9800-B. It was rebuilt from the damage taken against the Gadeels, using what the People's Republic of Estard could supply, which is why the rebuild is catalogued separately.

4. Why does it carry nose vulcans as well as head vulcans?

The nose pair is larger and more powerful, fitted for dogfighting and used heavily as air-to-ground weapons in A.W. 15. They are mounted on the fighter nose but can still be fired as close-range guns in Mobile Suit Mode.
