GNY-001 Gundam Astraea

GNY-001 Gundam Astraea is the first of Celestial Being's second-generation Gundams, completed at the Krung Thep colony in A.D. 2292 for the Mobile Suit Gundam 00P side story. It is a general-purpose testbed built from the GN-000 0 Gundam, named for the figure of Justice on the tarot card, and flown by Ruido Resonance.

What it does in the story

Astraea's service is weapons testing rather than armed intervention. Ruido flew the Proto GN Sword trials and the first full-power GN Launcher shot, which Chall Acustica fired and which overloaded the weapon. It later fired on the Gundam Plutone to test that machine's composite armour, and 874 used it to destroy four HRL Fantons in 36 seconds.

What makes it different

  • It exists to test other machines' weapons. Hardpoints on the forearms and legs take experimental gear fed by GN Condensers, and the results went into the third-generation Gundams. Its loadout changes from one 00P chapter to the next.
  • A power line runs from the drive to its collar. Removing one clavicle antenna exposes a line linked straight to the GN Drive, so a weapon fitted there draws particles first, at the cost of the antennae's jamming and control work.
  • Its drive cover was tried in two forms. Astraea used the second generation's three-thruster cover, which trades stability for thrust, and was also fitted with the new cone cover as the Type B. That test went well but upset the suit's balance, so it reverted.
  • It cannot use Trans-Am. Astraea carries a genuine GN Drive but no Trans-Am, which was not unlocked until 2308. It was also never dismantled: it went into storage, then to the shadow team Fereshte.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 18.3 m, 55.1 t empty, per Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12.7 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 18.3 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Astraea an early version of the Exia?

It is a separate machine, GNY-001 against GN-001, but the lineage runs one way. Astraea proved the beam rifle, the shield and the prototype sword, and its design became the basis for the Exia. The RG Astraea is a parts set that converts an RG Exia.

2. Why does its weapon list keep changing?

Because it was the testbed. The GN Launcher became the Virtue's bazooka, the Proto GN Sword became the Exia's GN Sword, and the Double GN Launcher and one-off Quad Cannon came out of the same trials.

3. What was wrong with the GN Launcher?

It could not handle the particle volume, so the first full-output shot backfired and leaked. Adjustments reduced that, and a version with a larger internal condenser could fire without the direct drive link, at lower output.

4. What happened to it afterwards?

It was kept rather than scrapped. The second-generation Gundams sat on standby while the third generation was built, then went to Fereshte, where Astraea was upgraded into the Astraea Type F.
