GN-009 Seraphim Gundam

GN-009 Seraphim Gundam is the second-season successor to the GN-004 Nadleeh in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2008, Anno Domini 2312), again flown by Tieria Erde. Its usual position is not on the ground at all: it forms the backpack of the GN-008 Seravee Gundam. The name comes from the seraphim, an angelic order it shares with the suit it rides on.

What it does in the story

Because it rides on Seravee's back, the Seraphim can enter a fight without launching. It detaches and shifts from backpack to mobile suit mid-battle, which is how it takes on the Garazzo in the thirty-ninth episode alongside the unmanned Seravee. In the final battle its Trial Field is what freezes the Innovators' suits across the battlefield.

What makes it different

  • Backpack form is a real transformation. The legs fold down into two large thrusters, the arms swing up and become a pair of GN Cannons, and the head retracts into the chest. When the two suits split, only the pilot seat travels from Seravee's chest across to the Seraphim.
  • The GN Drive goes with it. Seravee's reactor is mounted in the Seraphim's back, so once the two separate the larger suit runs on its own condensers and has a limited window of operation. Docking again lets the drive recharge them.
  • Its Trial Field reaches much further. The improved system covers the space around the colony-class mothership Celestial Being, wide enough to shut down a whole enemy formation. It only works for a pilot linked to Veda, and Tieria could not use it until his link was restored during the final battle.
  • Both hands carry two thumbs. They were shaped to hold a beam saber in either form, so each hand has a thumb on both sides and only one is active at a time, the spare folding flat against the palm.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 16.6 m according to Bandai's official spec, with a base weight of 27.4 t
  • 1/144: roughly 11.5 cm, which covers the HG00 kit and the Trans-Am Mode set with Seravee

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Seraphim available as its own kit?

Yes, as the 1/144 High Grade from 2009. It also comes in the HG00 Trans-Am Mode set paired with the Seravee, and the 1/100 Seravee from 2009 includes parts to build it.

2. Why is it shorter than the other Gundams?

It has to fold down small enough to serve as another suit's backpack, so the frame is slimmer and the head is smaller than a full-size Gundam's. The compact build also costs it particle storage.

3. What is the large face on its chest?

It is the same giant Gundam face that appears on the Seravee in Face Burst Mode, hidden until the Trial System is switched on. Its forehead lights briefly on activation and the eyes stay lit while the system runs.

4. Can the Seravee fight after the Seraphim leaves?

For a while. Without the reactor it falls back on its condensers, which is enough for a short engagement and even a brief Trans-Am, and that window is what the two-suit combination is built around.
