GN-007 Arios Gundam

GN-007 Arios Gundam is the transformable machine among Celestial Being's second-season Gundams in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2008, Anno Domini 2312), the successor to the GN-003 Kyrios and the suit flown by Allelujah Haptism. Celestial Being built it during the four years it spent rebuilding after its defeat in 2308.

What it does in the story

Its first sortie sets the pattern: it cuts the head and the GN Lance off a GN-XIII with a beam saber, then uses the submachine gun in its left forearm to help the 00 finish a second one. Its most useful contribution is speed rather than damage — at the first Memento Mori, Sumeragi has Arios enter Trans-Am so the ship itself can dodge the laser at the last moment. Docked with the GN Archer it becomes the Archer Arios and takes on the Innovators' Gadessa.

What makes it different

  • The Gundam face is put away in flight. The Kyrios flew with its face exposed. By the second season there was no reason left to advertise what the machine was, so the Arios stows the face in Flight Form to cut air resistance.
  • The rifle hangs under the nose in flight. The GN Twin Beam Rifle is a hand weapon in mobile suit form and mounts upside down on the lower right of the machine in Flight Form, so the same gun fires in either shape without being stowed.
  • Docking feeds the GN Archer from the drive. Arios's GN Drive connects directly to the GN Archer's nose unit when the two join up, which is what lets the combination work as one machine instead of a Gundam towing a drone.
  • It trades attack power for acceleration. Unlike the other new Gundams, this one was designed around speed, and Trans-Am raises that further. The trade is real: the design limited which missions it could be sent on, even though some of those missions could not be done without it.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 19.1 m according to Bandai's official spec
  • Weight: 55.4 t empty
  • 1/144: roughly 13.3 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 19.1 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Can the Arios transform in the air?

Yes. It changes between MS Form and Flight Form mid-flight, the ability it inherited from the Kyrios, and the mechanism is part of the airframe rather than a set of parts fitted for a particular mission.

2. What is the Archer Arios?

The combination of the Arios and its support unit, the GNR-101A GN Archer. Both dock in their flight forms, and the Arios's GN Drive connects straight into the GN Archer's nose in that state.

3. Where is the beam rifle in Flight Form?

Under the nose, mounted upside down on the lower right. Because it is the same weapon in both forms, the suit does not have to stow one gun and draw another when it transforms.

4. Why does it carry beam shields as well as sabers?

The two GN Beam Shields are fixed equipment, so the suit can block without spending a hand that might be holding the rifle. Two GN Vulcans in the nose cover the forward arc in Flight Form.
