GN-005 Gundam Virtue on video

GN-005 Gundam Virtue

GN-005 Gundam Virtue is the heavy artillery Gundam of Mobile Suit Gundam 00's first season (2007, Anno Domini 2307), built by Celestial Being at Krung Thep and flown by Tieria Erde. Its name comes from one of the angelic orders. Where the other third-generation suits skirmish, this one is built to break fleets and fortified positions.

What it does in the story

Virtue is in the series' first armed intervention and stays in action to the season's end. In the tenth episode it pushes back against the combined thrust of six Tieren Space Types, then strips its own armour mid-battle and comes out as the Nadleeh. Its place in the team passes to the GN-008 Seravee in the second season.

What makes it different

  • The armour is a second machine, not plating. Every outer plate can be jettisoned to uncover the GN-004 Nadleeh inside. That was not an escape trick at first: the mechanism existed so the switch to the inner suit and the activation of its Trial System could happen together.
  • The GN Field wraps the whole suit. Four generators on the legs and in the GN Cannons slide out to build a sphere that stops most beam and physical attacks, and it can be stretched to cover another Gundam. It costs a great deal of GN Particles, and a beam fired at the field's own compression rate can push through.
  • Burst Mode docks the bazooka to the reactor. The centre chest plate lifts and the rear of the GN Bazooka slides forward to link with the GN Drive, while the barrel splits and the inner section extends. The recoil shoves the suit backwards, so it cannot fire twice in quick succession.
  • The beam design beat a projectile version. Veda worked up a shell-firing alternative, the GN-005/PH Virtue Physical, then set it aside. Swapping equipment mid-mission was impractical with the crew and mothership Celestial Being had, and shared details might give away the machine underneath.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 18.4 m according to Bandai's official spec, with a base weight of 66.7 t
  • 1/144: roughly 12.8 cm, for the HG00 kit and its Trans-Am Mode version
  • 1/100: roughly 18.4 cm, which covers the 1/100 from 2008 and the Master Grade from 2021

Frequently asked questions

1. Does the Master Grade Virtue include the Nadleeh?

Yes. The 2021 Master Grade builds both the armoured suit and the inner GN-004, and the armour comes off after assembly. The 2008 1/100 works the same way; the 1/144 High Grade builds only the Virtue.

2. Why is the Virtue so heavy yet still quick?

GN Particles reduce the effective mass of whatever they permeate, and the effect continues while the drive is running. Its listed weight sits far below what the bulk suggests.

3. What did the other side call it?

The forces of the three power blocs nicknamed it the big one, which is about as much as they understood of it. Its designation stayed unknown to them through most of the season.

4. Can the GN Field be beaten?

Yes, two ways on record: a beam whose compression matches the field's own can slip through, and the Fangs of the Gundam Throne Zwei reached inside it. Altering the compression rate answers the first problem, not the second.
