GN-001 Gundam Exia

GN-001 Gundam Exia is the third-generation Gundam built by Celestial Being and piloted by Setsuna F. Seiei in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2007–2008, A.D. 2307). Bandai's profile gives it the development code "Seven Sword" and calls it a close-combat machine built to fight other Gundams.

What it does in the story

It closes the first season against Alejandro Corner's Alvaaron, tearing through the suit's GN Field. That fight is also where Trans-Am is first used: the system Aeolia Schenberg hid in the original GN Drive floods the frame with particles, turns the armour red and lifts output to three times normal. The same airframe comes back as Exia Repair in the second season, and as Repair II for the final battle.

What makes it different

  • It was designed to fight other Gundams. Bandai states the Exia was drawn up to counter a Gundam in case a traitor appeared inside Celestial Being, which is why it is built around blades rather than a general-purpose loadout.
  • Repair II cut the Seven Sword loadout to three. The rebuild reviewed the particle pathways, added new thrusters and reduced seven blades to three, with the GN Sword Kai as the main armament. The Exia's armament is a two-stage story, not one fixed list.
  • Repair and Repair II are the same airframe. After the first season the suit had lost an arm, its GN Sword was broken, the severed head was reattached and the right camera eye rebuilt from Tieren junk parts. Setsuna brought it back to Celestial Being, where Ian rebuilt it as Repair II.
  • Trans-Am was never an Exia-only system. Aeolia Schenberg hid it in the original GN Drive for the moment the plan went wrong. It triples output and raises defensive strength and thrust together, which is why the suit turns red mid-fight.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 18.3 m at the head, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12.7 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 18.3 cm
  • 1/60: roughly 30.5 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Are the Exia Repair and Exia Repair II different mobile suits?

No. Both are the GN-001 airframe after damage. Repair is the field patch job — one arm gone, GN Sword broken, head reattached, right camera eye rebuilt from Tieren scrap. Repair II is that same suit rebuilt by Ian, with reworked particle pathways and three blades.

2. Why does the Exia carry seven swords?

Because it was designed to fight a Gundam rather than a tank. Bandai ties the Seven Sword code name to the chance of a traitor inside Celestial Being, so the suit is built to close distance and cut instead of trading fire at range.

3. Is Gundam Astraea the same machine as the Exia?

No. Astraea is GNY-001, a separate machine with its own number. The Astraea parts set for the Real Grade Exia is a conversion set that uses an Exia kit as the base for a different mobile suit.

4. Which Exia appears in the second season?

Both repaired states. It returns as Repair early on and is rebuilt as Repair II in time for the final battle, which is the state the 2009 High Grade kit is modelled on.
