GAT-X1022 Blu Duel Gundam

GAT-X1022 Blu Duel Gundam is the close-combat member of Phantom Pain's three-machine team in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: STARGAZER (2006, C.E. 73), piloted by Mudie Holcroft. It began as a second Duel Gundam built after the First Alliance-PLANT War and was reworked under the Actaeon Project.

What it does in the story

It works as one third of a formation with Sven Cal Bayang's Strike Noir and Shams Couza's Verde Buster, and the three defend the land battleship Bonaparte when ZAFT attacks. Mudie closes on enemy machines while the other two hold the line; BuCUE variants bring it down.

What makes it different

• The Fortestra armour is fixed, not bolted on. The Long Dagger and Duel Dagger wore add-on armour that could be taken off; the Blu Duel's Fortestra is integrated into the body and cannot be jettisoned. That lets Variable Phase Shift cover the add-on plates as well.
• Almost every weapon sits inside the armour. Only the two head CIWS sit outside the Fortestra. The shield and its railgun hang from the right shoulder on a universal mount, the beam guns fold out of the forearms, and the sabers and Stiletto penetrators are racked in the legs and left shoulder.
• The head guns were made smaller on purpose. This suit uses 12.5 mm CIWS instead of the 75 mm Igelstellung of earlier Earth Alliance machines, trading hitting power for a deeper ammunition load.
