GAT-02L2 Dagger L

GAT-02L2 Dagger L is the Earth Alliance's mass-production mobile suit in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (C.E. 73), developed from the GAT-01A1 Dagger that the Alliance called the 105 Dagger. It fills out Alliance units in the opening episodes of the war, before the GAT-04 Windam begins to replace it.

What it does in the story

Four of them open the Second Alliance-PLANT War: Phantom Pain's Girty Lue carries two Doppelhorn-equipped Dagger Ls and two black Dark Dagger Ls into Armory One while the Extended pilots steal three new ZAFT Gundams. Two of the four are destroyed by Rey Za Burrel in the debris belt, and the type goes on to guard Alliance bases on Earth and to fly with the fleet sent against the PLANTs.

What makes it different

  • It is the 105 Dagger with the cost taken out. The basic structure follows the 105 Dagger, but the laminated armour is deleted to bring unit cost down and the design is simplified the way the Strike Dagger's was. That is what makes the production rate possible in the first place.
  • The Striker Pack fitting survives the cuts. Despite the cheaper airframe the Dagger L still takes Striker Packs, so one hull can be flown as a Jet Striker machine for air combat or a Doppelhorn machine for anti-ship work, with the Sword and Launcher packs also compatible.
  • The head guns are small on purpose. Four 12.5 mm Todesschrecken CIWS, two in the head and two on the shoulders, replace the 75 mm Igelstellung of earlier Alliance suits. The smaller round cannot hurt mobile suit armour, but it leaves room for far more ammunition.
  • Two of its knives are thrown, not swung. The Mk315 Stiletto is a rocket-propelled penetrator: thrown, then driven on by a vernier at its tail until it punches through armour and detonates. One sits in each side armour, alongside a beam saber.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 18.4 m at 55.05 t, on the published spec sheet
  • 1/144: roughly 13 cm, the scale of the 2021 High Grade release

Frequently asked questions

1. What separates the Dagger L from the 105 Dagger?

Cost and armour. The 105 Dagger carries laminated armour, the Dagger L does not, and its construction is simplified closer to the Strike Dagger's, while the Striker Pack system is kept intact.

2. What is the Dark Dagger L?

A Phantom Pain variant painted in a dark scheme to lower its visibility in space and used by Alliance special forces. It appears in the Armory One raid alongside the standard machines, carrying the Mk39 low-recoil cannon.

3. Why does the Dagger L carry a carbine instead of a rifle?

The M703K is shorter than a standard beam rifle and fires weaker beams, but its rate of fire and its handiness suit a suit designed to overwhelm an opponent in groups rather than to duel one.

4. Was the Dagger L built before or after the first war?

Sources disagree. In the version where it predates the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War it is deployed to the Ptolemaeus lunar base for the planned assault on the PLANTs, but it never fights in that war either way.
