G-Armor

G-Armor is the form the RX-78-2 Gundam takes when it combines with both halves of the G-Fighter, in the 1979 series Mobile Suit Gundam (U.C. 0079). It is a vehicle rather than a mobile suit: the Gundam forms the middle and the G-Fighter's modules close around it.

What it does in the story

Its value is speed of deployment: it carries the Gundam to a fight and releases it there, which makes it the most used of the G-Fighter combinations. Amuro Ray's proposal produced the joint that lets the right shield stack on the left one after separation, and Sayla Mass and Sleggar Law are listed as pilots.

What makes it different

  • Power crosses between the two modules. The G-Fighter's tank treads bridge the A-Parts and B-Parts so energy passes between them. Movement and weapons run from the G-Fighter's cockpit, though on its first appearance fire control stayed with the Gundam.
  • Two mega particle cannons sit on top. They are experimental beam weapons on the A-Parts, using E-cap technology like the Gundam's rifle but more powerful, and linking the two generators raises the shot count.
  • It wears both of the Gundam's shields. The waist and arms are exposed, so a 10 t shield goes on each forearm: a triple-honeycomb laminate of ceramic over super-hard steel between aramid fibre and luna titanium. On separation the right one stacks on the left.

How big is it?

  • Length: 28 m, with an 18 m width and a 120 t weight, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 19.4 cm long, which covers the HGUC set

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the G-Armor a separate machine from the Gundam?

It is the Gundam and the G-Fighter joined, so it cannot exist without both. The designation stays with the RX-78-2, and the form is classed as a support craft.

2. What is Bolt Out?

The release sequence: the A-Parts and B-Parts detach and re-form into the G-Fighter, leaving the Gundam free to fight.

3. Why does it need two shields?

Because the combination leaves the waist and arms uncovered. They are the only protection on those flanks, and without Amuro's joint the right one is thrown away on separation.

4. Does it appear outside the television series?

The second season of Thunderbolt has one carrying an RGM-79 GM into the Battle of A Baoa Qu, and it is playable in the Extreme Vs. games.
