FX-550 Skygrasper

FX-550 Skygrasper is the Earth Alliance's aerial support fighter from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (C.E. 71), designed by PMP with Morgenröte to serve the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam. It is a vehicle rather than a mobile suit, and its job is to resupply the Strike with Striker Packs mid-battle.

What it does in the story

The Archangel was assigned two when it met the 8th Space Fleet. After the ship reached Earth, Mu La Flaga moved into Unit 1 because his Moebius Zero cannot fly in atmosphere, and kept a Launcher Striker fitted for the firepower. Unit 2 went from Cagalli Yula Athha to Tolle Koenig and came back intact from only one sortie.

What makes it different

• It delivers the Strike's own equipment. Three hardpoints take any of the Strike's Striker Packs, so the suit never has to break off to the hangar. The fighter can also use what it carries, such as the Aile's thrusters or the Sword's anti-ship sword.
• It fights well enough on its own. A turret beam cannon on the back swivels to fire in different directions, one medium calibre cannon sits in each wing, and four 20mm machine guns behind the nose. Two weapon bays launch anti-ship missiles and bombs.
• It can hover and land like a helicopter. Like the F-7D Spearhead it was derived from, the Skygrasper is VTOL-capable, so it can operate from a ship without a runway.
• The mass-production version changes only paint. The Alliance built the type to support the Dagger-series suits that also take Striker Packs. Those units are otherwise identical to the two originals, in grey and yellow.
