FF-X7-Bst Core Booster

FF-X7-Bst Core Booster is Hervic Company's booster pack for the FF-X7 Core Fighter, the cockpit block that doubles as the RX-78-2 Gundam's escape craft. It appears in the compilation films Soldiers of Sorrow and Encounters in Space (1981-82, U.C. 0079), where it replaces the television series' G-Fighter.

What it does in the story

The White Base received one for trials on 7 November U.C. 0079, and Sayla Mass flew it as unit 006. She used its beam cannons to bring down Ortega's Dom, then sank a Jukon-class submarine and destroyed a Gogg at Belfast. Sleggar Law took 005 to Solomon, and Sayla's 006 later cut into Char Aznable's duel with the Gundam.

What makes it different

  • It is an attachment, not a new aircraft. The Core Fighter had a computer with ten times the processing power of other fighters, but it was small, lightly armed and short on fuel. The booster was drawn around it to fix those limits.
  • Docking costs it the fighter's missiles. The Core Fighter's wings fold inside the booster, so its own launchers are unusable. The booster carries two of its own below the beam cannons, plus a bay for two multi-warhead bombs.
  • The beam cannons borrow the Gundam's trick. Two cannons on top run off the reactor but use E-cap technology like the Gundam's beam rifle, and they aim through the same sight.
  • It is built for air and for space. Thermonuclear jet and rocket engines give it Mach 5.38, and a spray system smothers fires in damaged sections.

How big is it?

  • Length: 13.8 m, with a 12.6 m wingspan and a 6.75 m height, at 18.3 t, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 9.6 cm long, which covers the 1982 original kit

Frequently asked questions

1. Does the Gundam combine with the Core Booster?

No. The booster attaches to the Core Fighter, which is the Gundam's cockpit block. In the films it flies as a separate aircraft, the job the G-Fighter had on television.

2. Why did the films drop the G-Fighter?

Tomino and Yasuhiko both disliked that design, which existed to satisfy sponsors, and the Core Booster was the more plausible substitute.

3. How many were built?

Sixteen during the One Year War, six of which saw combat. Two went to the White Base, numbered 005 and 006.

4. Which release includes it?

The 1982 1/144 kit is the release sold under this name; the aircraft also comes as an accessory in figure sets such as the MSiA RX-78-2 double pack.
