F90IIIY Cluster Gundam

F90IIIY Cluster Gundam is the third machine in the Earth Federation's F90 line, built by the Strategic Naval Research Institute and introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam Silhouette Formula 91 (U.C. 0123). Earth Federation pilot Lyle Wolf takes it into combat immediately after it is completed.

What it does in the story

SNRI announces the F90III in a trade journal in December U.C. 0122, in the same issue that reveals the F91 is being developed alongside it. The Cluster Gundam is finished at SNRI's Frontier I facility and sent straight at the Crossbone Vanguard's Death Guns squad in March U.C. 0123, which is where the Silhouette Formula 91 material puts its first action.

What makes it different

  • The cockpit is the escape vehicle. A Core Block System sits in the torso where an ordinary cockpit would be. In an emergency the block becomes a Core Fighter and carries both the pilot and the combat data stored in the cockpit out of the fight, which is the reason the F90III was built this way.
  • The Core Fighter becomes a booster. Docked to the Cluster Gundam's backpack, the same fighter forms a Core Booster. It is not a fighter that fights alone but a small craft with the mobile suit's thrust behind it, which is what makes the escape survivable rather than merely possible.
  • Ten hardpoints cover the body. Two on top of each shoulder, two on the forearm sides, two on the front skirt, two on the side skirts and two on the legs. They take Mission Packs, spare e-pacs for the beam rifle, or a beam shield, and they are covered when empty.
  • Its bazooka is aimed at the F91's firepower. SNRI's experimental mega beam bazooka is rated against the VSBR carried by the F91. One is handheld and the second can be latched to a side skirt hardpoint and fired from there, which is how the suit brings two to bear at once.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 15.0 m, at 9.7 t dry and 26.5 t full, on the published spec sheet
  • 1/144: roughly 10.5 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 15 cm, the scale of both the 1993 kit and the 2024 Master Grade

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Cluster Gundam an F90 variant?

It is treated as the third machine of the F90 series rather than a Mission Pack fitted to an existing F90, and Bandai's F90 A to Z site filed it as the Y-Type in August 2024. The F90 Gundam F90 itself is a separate entry.

2. What is the Core Booster for?

It is the Core Fighter docked to the Cluster Gundam's backpack, which adds the suit's thrust and acceleration to the small craft so the pilot can leave a battle at speed instead of drifting out of it.

3. Which kits of the Cluster Gundam exist?

A 1/100 kit in the 1993 Silhouette Formula 91 series, and a 1/100 Master Grade released as a P-Bandai exclusive in 2024. The Master Grade builds the Core Fighter and Core Booster as separate assemblies.

4. Which comics does it appear in?

It debuts in Mobile Suit Gundam Silhouette Formula 91, returns in Mobile Suit Gundam F90 Cluster, and cameos in Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula.
