F-90 Gundam F90 on video

F-90 Gundam F90

F90 Gundam F90 is the Earth Federation's prototype from Mobile Suit Gundam F90, the 1990 model and manga project that led into the 1991 film Mobile Suit Gundam F91. It was built by SNRI with Kunio Okawara on mechanical design, rolled out in U.C. 0111, and its story is set in U.C. 0120.

What it does in the story

In U.C. 0120 the 13th Experimental Squadron is testing two F90s at Side 4 when the Mars Independent Zeon Forces, the Oldsmobile, attack and seize the second unit. The squadron pursues to Mars, and test pilot Def Stallion takes the first unit into the enemy base, where he faces the captured machine rebuilt to Oldsmobile specification.

What makes it different

  • The suit is deliberately bare, and the Mission Packs supply the role. The brief was to strip out everything not needed for basic movement — even built-in guns went, with only the head Vulcans later restored — then add equipment only when a mission asked. That keeps it from carrying dead weight, and a new weapon needs only a new pack, not a new machine.
  • The Mission Pack letters are initials of the job. A is Assault for long-range attack, F is Fight for melee, H is Hover for high-speed ground work, M is Marine for underwater, E is Electronic for jamming and P is Plunge for atmospheric entry. The set runs from A to Z, with X, Y and Z kept for special packs.
  • It is the machine that made 15 m the standard size. At 14.8 m at the head it was well under the roughly 20 m machines before it, and from F90 onward the 15 m class became mainstream through the V Gundam era. That is why a 1/100 F90 is barely larger than an older 1/144 kit.
  • The two test units ran different personality computers. Unit 1 carried Type A.R, built to read enemy movement ahead of time, and unit 2 carried Type C.A. The processor used a holographic cube with more than a million synapse processors, a first for a mobile suit, and it managed the Mission Packs as well as the suit.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 14.8 m, with the suit listed at 7.5 t dry and 17.8 t fully equipped
  • 1/100: roughly 14.8 cm, scaling from the official 14.8 m head height

Frequently asked questions

1. Do the Mission Packs include the F90 body?

No. Each Mission Pack is an add-on set that needs the Master Grade 1/100 Gundam F90 sold separately, which is why the pack boxes are marked as not containing the mobile suit. The Mission Pack Hangar Twin Set is a display stand rather than a suit.

2. What do the letters on the Mission Packs mean?

Each letter is the initial of the role: A Assault, F Fight, H Hover, M Marine, E Electronic, P Plunge, S Support, and so on through the alphabet. X, Y and Z are the exception, covering special and combined packs.

3. Is F90 the suit from the F91 film?

No. F90 comes from the earlier model and manga project set in U.C. 0120; F91 is the machine that headlines the 1991 film three years later. F90 is the predecessor, and the two are catalogued separately.

4. What is the difference between the two F90 units?

The main difference in the setting is the personality computer: Type A.R in unit 1, Type C.A in unit 2. Unit 2 is also the one the Oldsmobile captured and rebuilt as the Mars Independent Zeon Forces Type.
