Dodai Kai

Dodai Kai is not a mobile suit. It is a sub-flight system, a flat carrier the AEUG developed so its machines could keep up in the air and in space, appearing in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (U.C. 0087) and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. It follows the earlier Dodai YS and is ridden by a mobile suit rather than fighting on its own.

What it does in the story

It moves AEUG and Karaba units between engagements through the Gryps War and the First Neo Zeon War, carrying machines such as the Hyaku Shiki and the GM III. The type fades as both groups dissolve and the Earth Federation moves to the Base Jabber, though Oldsmobile Forces units still use Dodai Kais in U.C. 0122.

What makes it different

  • Two mobile suits ride on top of it. A carried machine kneels on the hull and holds a grip on the upper part with one hand, and the platform takes two at a time. The suits on it do the fighting.
  • It usually has nobody at the controls. The Dodai Kai is steered from the mobile suit it is carrying, which is why it is normally unmanned. It can be operated by a pilot when a crewed run is needed.
  • The missile launchers sit under hatches. A set of three-tube launchers is fitted on either side of the cockpit, covered when not in use. That is the platform's only armament, and it belongs to the carrier rather than the suit riding it.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Dodai Kai a mobile suit?

No. It is classed as a sub-flight system: a vehicle that carries mobile suits between points instead of fighting.

2. How many mobile suits can a Dodai Kai carry?

Up to two. Each one kneels on the platform and holds the grip on its upper surface with a single hand.

3. Does a Dodai Kai need a pilot?

Usually not. Control comes from the mobile suit riding it; a pilot is only needed when it is flown on its own.

4. What replaced the Dodai Kai?

The Base Jabber took over as the Earth Federation's sub-flight system, as the AEUG and Karaba were wound up.
